Julia Morgan (1872-1957) graduated from University of California, Berkeley's Civil Engineering department in 1894, studying architecture unofficially under Bernard Maybeck. With Maybeck's encouragement, she went on to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1898, Morgan became the first woman to study at the Ecole, graduating in 1900.
